You probably know the feeling. Your headphones are worn out, or the wires get in the way during every run. You need new headphones.
But you don't buy them right away. Because finding the perfect headphones for your specific needs isn't actually that easy.
Maybe you enjoy long runs but are tired of getting sore ears? Maybe you can't stand ear pads that crumble after you've used them and sweated in the gym? Or maybe you just want something wireless and light that delivers fantastic sound?
If you want to find the perfect set of headphones just for you, read our guide here, where we take you through a world of headphones created for your active lifestyle.
WHICH TYPE OF HEADPHONES DO YOU PREFER?
Among headphones, there are three particular types of fit you should consider. Do you prefer in-ear, on-ear, or over-ear headphones?
In-ear headphones are extremely popular. Especially among runners and other exercisers who love to run and jump in nature or at the gym.
With in-ear headphones, you don't wear anything on or around your ear; instead, you can enjoy sound that seals perfectly in your ear. An advantage for those who want a completely secure fit and high comfort.

On-ear headphones are for you who don't like wearing earplugs but still want a light headphone that allows for plenty of movement. These are often available in several different versions, where the headphone's band either goes behind the neck or over the head. Perfect for everything from walks in nature to a good run.

Over-ear headphones are a good match for you if you want maximum sound for your workouts or on the go. Over-ear headphones are often a bit larger, and the ear pad goes around your ear, sealing tightly along your head. This also means there's room for truly sharp sound experiences – without distractions from the outside world.
Our over-ear headphone BOOM has won several awards. See it here. →
BOOM is also available with active noise cancellation.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR FULL FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT AND A PERFECT FIT?
Now that we've covered the three types of headphones you'll most often encounter, let's look at some more general things to consider before choosing a new pair of headphones.
ARE THEY WIRELESS?
Traditionally, many headphones have had wires, but if you want full freedom of movement with your headphones on, it's a good idea to choose headphones that can connect via Bluetooth and therefore don't require a plug for your phone or other device.
WHAT KIND OF EARBUDS OR EAR PADS DO THEY COME WITH?
For many, earbuds are the source of sore ear canals when running and exercising. If you want in-ear headphones, it's important to find out which earplugs suit you. Should they be made of soft, moldable memory foam that adapts to your ear? Do you prefer comfortable silicone on your earplugs? And should you have a choice of different sizes, because your ear canal is either wide or narrow?
Or what about the ear pads on on-ear and over-ear headphones: Should they be made of PU leather? Of mesh? Or something else entirely? It varies greatly how the material feels against the ear – and what it can withstand.

CAN YOU REPLACE PARTS?
When buying headphones, it's worth considering whether certain parts can be replaced if they become worn. Here, it's particularly relevant to check if ear pads and earplugs are replaceable – and if they can be bought separately.
These are the parts that, due to their frequent contact with the skin, wear out fastest with use. Choosing headphones with replaceable elements is not only smart. It's also a more sustainable solution, where you don't have to replace the entire headphone just because of wear and tear on smaller parts such as the ear pads.
Many of our headphones have replaceable ear pads. See for example BOOM and AL4 FREEDOM.
CAN THEY WITHSTAND WATER AND SWEAT?
If you plan to use your headphones for running or training where you get your heart rate up, it's important to consider if they can withstand water and sweat. And with the Danish weather, you're rarely far from the next downpour.
WHAT IS THE BATTERY LIFE?
There's nothing worse than headphones that run out of power when you're in the middle of a workout or a run. Therefore, it's also important to consider if your headphones hold enough charge for your needs – and how often you're willing to spend time charging them.
